Dependent Eligibility

A dependent must be a spouse or child that is a resident of Canada and covered under the Manitoba Provincial Health Plan.

Spouse – by marriage or under any other formal union recognized by law, or your partner of the same or opposite sex who is publicly represented as your spouse. To be recognized as common-law status you must have cohabited with your partner for 12 consecutive months.

Children – the employee’s children or spouse’s children (other than foster children) if they’re not married or in any other formal union recognized by law and are under age 21. Dependents between 21 & 26 are eligible if attending an educational institution on a full-time basis. Annual confirmation of paid tuition may be required.

Over-Age Dependents

Your group policy provides coverage for dependent children (excluding foster children) who are age 21 and up to age 26, provided they are attending an educational institution recognized under the Income Tax Act (Canada) full-time and entirely dependent on the employee for financial support. A child is considered a full-time student if he has been in registered attendance at an elementary school, high school, university, or similar educational institution for 15 hours a week or more sometime in the last 6 months.

If the dependent will be a full-time student after they turn age 21, please complete the Over-Age Dependent Form and return it to benefits office with proof of registration in order to extend coverage.
